Een viltvacht:
een diervriendelijke schapenvacht.

De viltvachten die ik maak zijn van wol die afkomstig is van mijn eigen schapen, schapen uit kuddes die natuur- of cultuurgebieden begrazen of die hobbymatig gehouden worden. Het schaap huppelt na het scheren weer vrolijk verder en de afgeschoren wol wordt bewerkt tot een viltvacht (ook wel vegetarische schapenvacht genoemd).
Bij het vervaardigen van het vachtkleed komt er een laag wol aan de scheerzijde van de afgeschoren vacht. Deze wol moet eerst gekaard worden om goed te willen vilten.
Deze gekaarde wol wordt met een ambacht dat natvilten heet, bevestigd aan de vacht. Er ontstaat een stevige laag vilt aan de onderkant. Het is een vrij zware en vieze klus, maar ik doe het met veel plezier. In mijn workshops vachtvilten leer ik je het hele proces.
Tijdens het proces wordt de vacht helemaal schoon. Er wordt alleen met water en zeep gewerkt. Wel kan het zijn dat er her en der nog een stukje hooi, takje of heide in zit.
Een wollen vacht is heerlijk om op te zitten of liggen bij zowel warme als koude temperaturen, omdat wol van nature vocht- en temperatuurregulerend is. Het voelt heerlijk zacht.
Ook worden ze steeds vaker als yogamat gebruikt.
Omdat ze geluid absorberen, zullen ze ook bijdragen aan een prettige akoestiek in huis.
Bovendien staan ze gewoon ontzettend mooi in je interieur! Voor elke stijl is er wel een passende vacht.
En mocht je een kat of hond hebben..... dan zul je merken dat ook zij er gek op zijn.
Wol is van nature slijtvast en water- en vuilafstotend.
De vacht is wasbaar in de wasmachine, op het wolwasprogramma (koud of 30°C) . Laat hem daarna liggend drogen.
Liever niet kammen of stofzuigen, uitschudden is beter. Een vacht met lange lokken kan altijd nog wat verharen.
My love for wool actually started from of my Border Collie. After some training sessions we decided to keep some sheep ourselves. After shearing, I had trouble just throwing the wool away.... that beautiful raw wool... I wanted to do something with it!
An animalfriendly sheeprug.
100% animalfriendly, 100% handmade
An animalfriendly sheeprug is a leatherfree sheepskin rug made of 100% raw wool, which comes from Dutch sheep kept as a hobby or for natural grazing purposes in nature reserves in our little country. After shaving, the sheep goes back wandering around, and the wool coat is worked by hand into a felted sheeprug (sometimes called a vegetarian sheepskin).
When making the rug, I put a layer of carded wool on the downside of the coat.
This layer of carded wool will be secured to the top coat by an old craft called 'wet felting'. By the use of hot water and soap only (well, and manpower), it becomes a solid, secured layer of felt, holding the sheepskin together.
During the process, the wool is cleaned thoroughly. But, there still can be a little bit of straw, hay of some heath or other local flora left.
Because the wool is not chemically manipulated, all the colours are the natural colours of the sheep itself. Every sheepskin is unique. Unique in colour and structure of the wool. Just like the sheep has made it.
A felted sheeprug is very comfortable to sit on. It's also very soft on your feet. Because wool is self-regulating, it is comfortable in both hot and cold situations.
It is often used as a yoga mat.
Of course they are just lovely in your interior. Which style you may have, there will be a suitable rug.
And if you have a cat or dog, you will notice that they love the rugs too!
The sheeprug is washable in the washing machine using the wool program. Leave it flat to dry.
A felted sheeprug is always shedding a tiny bit.
